2006: Christchurch Vegans Hold Second Annual Triathlon
Photos
Twenty participants aged 11 to 57 swam, cycled and ran in the Christchurch Vegetarian Society's Second Annual Vegan Triathlon on February 26th amid spectacular summer weather while more than a dozen volunteers and well-wishers cheered them on. The course, which began and ended at the QE2 Park and Leisure Centre, traced an oceanside course along Marine Parade in Brighton. The event offered participants a choice of either a 300m or 600m swim, followed by a 10km or 17 km cycle ride, finishing off with a 2.1km or 4.2 km run.
Though few would confess to it, competition was fierce and at least one participant took a tumble trying to set a personal best. Building on the success of last year's triathlon, local businesses and organisations including Piko Organics, Wyenova, Eat Your Greenz, Arts Unique, and SAFE were approached and agreed to donate prizes, as did Alaistair Duff and Sophie Wadeson. An after-race get together at Dux-de-Lux allowed everyone to model the fabulous Vegan Triathlon t-shirt (put together by Gaynor, Nichola Kriek and her sister, Julieanne) and relive the day's glory or nurse wounded bodies in sympathetic company.
